IBE offers two certification tracks with different specializations in order to meet your needs. The IBE Certification programs aim to provide an introductory level course of study suitable for people from varying backgrounds who have an interest in the built environment and its effect on the health of people and the natural environment. The tracks are not career training in itself, but are a supplement to the many related fields.
They cover and can complement careers in Architecture, Interior and Landscape Design, Building, Town planning, Natural Health, Social Work, Indoor Environmentalists, and many others. They are also suited to people coming from a personal point of view, whether to improve their own health or to build their own home.
The learning process is relaxed and flexible. This is more than a qualification. This is a philosophy to be developed over a lifetime. Whether students finish the prescribed assignments
is less important than if they continue to learn from people and the world around them, and adopt healthy and sustainable living into their work and lifestyles.
Building Biology Practitioner (BBP)
This is the first step for those new to Building Biology. This certification track is completely distance learning and is designed for those who want to improve their homes and start educating others. It includes a 2-3 month self-study course (IBE 101) combined with on-line courses based on your area of interest. You must complete at least 50 hours of 200 level on-line courses in addition to IBE 101.
You have up to 2 years to complete the program. This entire program is done through distance learning.
Those with prior experience who wish to receive credit for such, should contact IBE for further information. Note that an application with a non-reimbursable administrative fee will be required for those wishing to challenge courses to receive credit. Required contact hours will be set based on your experience.
Building Biology Environmental Consultant (BBEC)
This certification track is for BBPs or those with experience (application required for non-BBPs), who wish to expand their outreach to include home/office consultation for clients who are building, remodeling or who want assessments. This track is a combination of distance learning and hands-on interactive seminars. It includes several 200 level on-line courses (200 total contact hours - 150 above the BBP requirement), as well as, three separate 5-day seminars (IBE 211, IBE 212, IBE 213) to learn the investigation and mitigation techniques. Each seminar has an exam, and there is also a final project (IBE 221) requirement for you to demonstrate understanding of the IBE principles.
